This is one in a series of weekly spotlights on cool projects in the open source community that are looking for exposure or assistance. If you'd like your project to be featured, hit up us up at support at this domain and let us know about it.
This week the spotlight is on Hacktoberfest, which is organized by DigitalOcean.
Hacktoberfest is a yearly Open Source push organized by Digital Ocean and sponsored by GitHub and Twilio. It's free and open to everyone who wants to participate, world wide. If you open 5 non-trivial PRs on repositories that are not your own, they'll ship you a t-shirt.
You can contribute to any public project on GitHub to play along. If you are looking for ways to help, or aren't sure about how to get started then Hacktoberfest has some suggested repositories.
Hacktoberfest hopes to create a burst of OSS activity in just a month, and have a long lasting impact on the community. Last year there were about 50,000 developers participating in the event, with close to 100,000 participants since 2014.
We ran a hackathon last year to help people get their PRs in, and while we aren't doing it this year, if you need help just hit reply and let us know. We'd love to pair with you and help work on some open source.
Happy hacking, and happy Hacktoberfest!
